India’s d aily new coronavirus cases dropped below the 2-lakh mark for the first time after 40 days with 1,96,427 fresh infections, and 3,511 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

India’s daily cases of Covid-19 dropped below two lakh with 1,96,427 lakh fresh infections reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll, meanwhile, climbed to 3,07,231 with 3,511 deaths in a day. The country crossed the grim milestone of recording over 2 lakh cases in a day on April 15.

India’s Covid-19 active caseload has decreased since its last peak on May 10. According to Union health ministry data updated on Tuesday morning, the active case tally declined to 25,86,782.

West Bengal also made an entry in the top five states with the highest reported cases on Tuesday.

Top five states which registered maximum cases are Tamil Nadu with 34,867 cases, followed by Karnataka with 25,311 cases, Maharashtra with 22,122 cases, West Bengal with 17,883 cases and Kerala with 17,821 cases.

Around 60.07% of the new cases have been reported from these five states, with Tamil Nadu alone responsible for 17.75% of the new cases

Over 3,500 deaths have been reported in India in the last 24 hours. Maximum casualties were reported in Maharashtra (592), followed by Karnataka (529).

A total of 20,58,112 tests were conducted in a span of 24 hours in the country and cumulatively 33,25,94,176 tests have been done so far.

The Union Health Ministry informed that as many as 19,85,38,999 doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered so far since the commencement of the vaccination drive on January 16.

India’s daily spike of coronavirus cases remained below the 3 lakh mark, on May 17, for the first time after 26 days. Since then, the daily new cases in the country have been hovering below the 3-lakh mark. On May 19, India recorded the highest single-day Covid-19 fatalities with 4,529 new deaths in the last 24 hours.
